Gregory Butte stands at the mouth of Last Chance Bay above a major meander of the Colorado River channel. The massive formation rises more than 1,000 feet (305 meters) above the lake and is easily
one of its most identifiable landmarks.
Herbert E. Gregory was a geologist who did extensive work in southern Utah and northern Arizona between
1915 and 1951. Originally, GregoryΓÇÖs name was attached to an arch in the Escalante drainage, but when the reservoir flooded that location, the place name was moved to this butte.
